Other Windows NT  Administration Tools

Introduction to other administration tools

  • The tools mentioned within this module  can be used by the system administrator  to configure the system and are not included in the administrative tools .

  • They range in function from setting up the printer to changing the registry  keys and can be found predominantly in the Control panel

Key Topics

  • Control Panel

  • System Services

  • System Properties

  • Printer Installation

  • Printer Configuration

  • Network Setup

  • System Registry

  • Task Manager

System Control Panel

  • The control panel is the configuration center of your Windows NT  system where you can effectively configure and install all hardware and software  required by your system.

  • Since Windows NT  does not support plug and play the only practical method of adding a new hardware component is to use the control panel and to plan and configure all new hardware manually .

  • The control panel is the safe method of configuration in Windows NT . The other method is directly changing the registry , which is a lot more risky.

System Properties

The system icon in the control panel has six separate properties tabs:

General

  • Which gives you basic information  about your system.

Hardware  Profile

  • Allow you to add and view different hardware profiles.

Performance

  • Allow you to view and change the performance  features of your system.

Environment

  • Allows the administrator  to setup system and user variables.

Startup/Shutdown

  • Allows the startup  menu to be changed stored in the BOOT.INI  file and configure the recovery  option after a system stop.

User Profiles

  • Setup user desktop profiles, which could be set to local or roaming.

System Printing Installation

  • Windows NT  provides you with an improved printer installation  wizard, which is both easy to use and quick.

  • There are two sorts of printers  installed on a Windows NT  system, a Local Printer and a Network Printer.

  • Local printers  installed on a computer can be shared on a network  if a network has been setup.

Printer Setup

  • High levels of security may be set on the printer in secure operating systems such as windows NT

  • Printer properties  can be used to view and configure our printer hardware configuration  and security within the network .

  • You could also install other operating system  printer drivers  on a windows NT print server for other operating system client to access the printer.

  • Windows NT  allows you to redirect print jobs to an identical printer if this printer has problems.

Setting up the Network

  • The network  settings of Windows NT  can only be installed manually  within Windows NT using the network option in the control panel or using the plug and play configuration during the Windows NT installation .

  • Once the hardware devices  have been installed you can configure the networking services  and protocols.

  • The network  services  within Windows NT  contain all the standard clients of windows 9x  and also include Remote Access Service (RAS ), Data Link Control (DLC ) for networked HP printer etc.

System Registry

  • The Registry is a rational hierarchical database of all the system settings including hardware configuration  settings, user setting and software  settings.

System Registry Keys

  • The registry  cascading tree  structure, which is organized  in to main, key topics and sub key topic  braches.

Regedit and Regedt32.exe

  • The registry  can be viewed inside Windows NT  either by using REGEDIT .EXE or REGEDT32.EXE.

  • REGEDIT  is the same as the windows 9x  registry  editor allowing the user to change the standard system keys, save the registry, import a registry and search the registry for particular keys.

  • REGEDT32  is Windows NT ’s recommended editor which includes all previous functionality of regedit.exe plus allowing the user to view and change security settings inside windows NT with regards to the registry .

Task Manager  Monitoring

  • Windows NT  task manager gives you a real time monitoring capability and a timed report of computer performance , system processes and running applications

  • The Task manager  can also start new tasks, stop any applications  and processes currently running which have stopped responding, and adjust the priority of
